"The 2026/27 BMYS fishing season kicked off with the Twilight Fishing Competition" on the afternoon of 21 October with 16 boats and a total of 25 crew participating.
Initially sea conditions were quite choppy with a brisk south/westerly wind blowing, however as the afternoon progressed the wind reduced making conditions on the water better.
Fishing was generally hit and miss with only about half the boats weighing in the targeted snapper species with most being caught on the local reefs with the outgoing tide. The heaviest fish weighed in was a 3.46 Kg snapper caught by Tony Roukakis with other fish in the 3 - 2 Kg range weighed in by Will Bean, Harry Petsios and Wayne Paravacini.
The seals again plagued many of the fisherman impacting on fishing results, with one monster standing up on its tail looking like it wanted to climb into "Bushies" boat to get a feed.
The event finished with the presentations and an evening meal of hearty soup and hot dogs which were well received. As usual there were many stories of the one that got away.
Thanks go to Neil Starke, Ross Hodge (who prepared the food) and Max Trist who again was the 'honest" Weigh Master.
