Did you know you must be qualified to operate a VHF radio? An operator is any person who maintains or uses a VHF radio. Using includes receiving and transmitting messages as well as monitoring for navigational warnings and weather forecasts.
The two courses being offered by the club are:
Australia Waters Qualification: (AWQ) $220.00 - Ideal for casual boaters who remain within 12 nautical miles of the coast. This will not cover you if you fish areas such as the Horseshoe off Portland, the oil rigs off Gippsland or the shelf at Bermagui.
Short Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) $320.00 - Internationally recognised and covers you worldwide.
Please contact the Boating Committee to register or if you would like further information.
The courses will be run concurrently in the downstairs bar at BMYS from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 16th, 2025.
The course involves an introduction to VHF and how it works, the radios including correct operation and maintenance, followed by a written and practical exam using the radios.
