Able Day on the Bay Event at BMYS on Saturday 21st July 2018

In 2006 Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron hosted the first annual Able Day on the Bay for a group of people with varying degrees of deafness and blindness from an organisation called Able Australia.

For many of the Able Australia clients this was the first time to experience a ride in a boat.

Able Australia is now one of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations, delivering high quality, person-centred services to people living with multiple disabilities, including deaf blindness and in community support services.

We are proud say that Saturday 21st July was the 9th year that BMYS has hosted this great event for people that do not normally have the opportunity to enjoy a ride in a boat. With exceptional weather, the day started with morning tea, official welcome to all from Commodore David Bell and then the activities of boat rides on the bay using boats and crews volunteered by Club members commenced. Club Vice Commodore Les Sabo was ‘Boater in Chief’. We also had use of the Parkdale Yacht Club rescue boat and this was skippered by Club member Noel McNicol.

Once again BMYS member Alan Flude organised cars from the Model T Ford Club of Victoria and offered joy rides around Beaumaris in the beautiful old vintage cars. Able Clients also enjoyed car rides in Anthony Heyde’s Studebaker and BMYS member John Humphris’s vintage Rolls Royce.

Lunch of fish and chips was served in the downstairs Pelican Bar for all those taking part in the day, which included the volunteers.

To see the love, care and devotion being provided by the people from Able Australia which includes many volunteers and amiably assisted by Club members was very special. It is pleasing just to see and be aware that there really are some nice things taking place around us. You just need to know where to look.

Our special thanks to Club members who generously supported the day, also to Club members Jan and Ken Flude and their team of volunteers, together with BMYS Manager Anthony Heyde and staff, all of whom were pivotal in ensuring that the day was the spectacular success it was.
