A BOATING HAVEN IN BEAUMARIS BAY

Club from the Air

Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron Is located on the Eastern Shore of Port Phillip Bay and nestles into the cliff face approximately half way between Ricketts Point and Mentone Beach. The clubhouse is not visible from the road and, being designed and decorated to blend in with the natural landscape. It is not easily spotted from the sea either.

Members and their guests, however, enjoy uninterrupted views of the bay from the glassed-in bar and dining areas. A measure of the natural beauty of the venue is the common practice of club members, their children and friends choosing the club for celebrations of weddings and other major milestones.

The Squadron's charter is to promote the sport of boating and create a social environment where boating activities are involved. Nearly all forms of water craft can be seen at the club, however, it would be only fair to say that a significant majority of club members own trailable power boats in the four to seven meter range.

In addition to an enjoyable social program, the club promotes two broad areas of recreational boating focus -Nav Rallies and Fishing. Enthusiastic committees encourage participation in both activities and there is a comprehensive program of competitions through the year. Many members participate competitively in both boating and fishing; on the other hand, many others just do their own thing.

Nav Ralliers not only compete in our own events but are encouraged to compete in events run by sister clubs, most of whom are members of Yachting Victoria, Power Boat Division. The YV manages a competition series made up of member clubs' major events, including our own very prestigious 'Ricketts Point Regatta', which usually attracts up to 50 boats.

The fishing committee also arranges competitions with other clubs both at Beaumaris and at other locations. The squadron's major fishing events are so well attended that it is necessary to utilise supervised parking from as early as 4.30 in the morning. The environmentally aware will enjoy the fact that Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron actively lobbies for responsible fishing and designs competitions which do not encourage needless taking of catch.

If this all sounds too professional for folks who are new to these sports -no problem -the club places a special focus on helping people to be introduced to boating and get started. In log trialing for instance, it is common to take novices out with experienced crews and training provided willingly and free of charge.

All events are planned well in advance and are included in the Squadron's calendar of events. This is supported by timely promotional prompts which are imbedded amongst the newsy and informative boating and fishing articles in "On Deck', a monthly magazine mailed each month to every member.

The Squadron offers two double ramps, one facing south and the other east, parking facilities are generous by most standards and a functional fish cleaning, boat washing and BBQ area add to the ease and enjoyment of boating at BMYS.

Regardless of sporting preferences, the Squadron's social events, dining facilities are excellent and are enjoyed equally by members, members' partners and guests.
